Adventures in Air Con or is that Con Air?

A sweaty cartoon monkey, dressed as a mechanic, looking at an air-conditioning unit, with tools
Oh Yes, I'm cool...Really

You may not know it, But England has been warm this last few days, some may call it Climate Change, some call it summer.

I think it's likely the former with the latter making it's annual appearance..but at that precise moment Midea dropped a promotion into my inbox, offering £150 off a "Portable Air-conditioning Unit" and seeing as I had a bit of extra cash in my pocket, and the Serene Lady Margaret (My wife of some 40 odd years and a Lady of a certain age) was complaining about the temperature,I decided to take the plunge..ponied up the hard earned (Well, return on investments...Rentier? Moi?...N'est pas?) and thought little of it..Until two lovely lads with broad Leeds accents drove up to Eggleston Towers in a white van...and started to man handle a box the size of small bungalow out of the back.

Now, gentle reader, please be aware that the SLM & I live in rather a small bungalow, and this piece of kit was huge..the Outside unit was maybe the size of a decent suitcase, the larger, indoor unit was far bigger, maybe 1m square and about 45cm deep..and the connecting tubing (which was also pretty meaty) was about 2 meters long...and it didn't separate... Hmmm sayeth I, this might cause us problems..But where there is a will... so we set it up, switched it on..and the effect was miraculous. The air in the living room which had previously had the consistency of warm tomato soup was crisp, clear and unsweatymaking.

So, that's a win?

Not really, you see it's ugly, huge and leaks water on the conservatory floor...But thus far I'm willing to ignore that for the cool temps and unbroken nights sleep..and it's relatively greedy in energy terms..we're fortunate to have solar panels, so during the hottest times, that's when our electricity is the cheapest(free) and also there is the moral dilemma, am I cooling myself while heating the planet, and therefore avoiding doing anything about the oncoming crisis, and that makes me uncomfortable, knowing that I'm contributing to the whole thing..yes, I use solar power, yes, It's a small unit..look at the whataboutery in India & China. I have Grandkids, and I want them to have a world to inherit...I just hope those guys sorting out fusion get a move on, then we can put the whole climate change argument away, and I can get on with being cool in the summer
